BlueEarthDefense

Blue Earth Defense is an international organization that is dedicated to defending our one and only home. BED is run by a group of volunteers spanning three continents, who have come together by our common love for Mother Earth and the natural world.

“We are not defending the planet. We are the planet defending itself.” – A Latin American Indigenous saying

BED is a biocentric organization. That means that we put the needs of the natural world above anything else. The current destruction of the natural world is due, to a large extent, to human’s ideological separation from the natural world. Despite thousands of years of indoctrination that humans are somehow above nature and the consequent attempts to control nature, the reality is that humans are as much a part of the natural world as elephants, bees, cedar trees, rivers, or stones. While the so-called advanced human civilization seeks an ultimate subordination of nature, BED has joined the few environmentalist organizations that have aligned itself with nature in this struggle. As members of this planet, we do not believe that we can ever be separated from nature or that our well-being could ever be separated from the well-being of the planet. As a result, we also reject any false solutions that do not contribute to the overall well-being of the planet.

While BED is dedicated to fighting for the natural world, we also recognize other forms of exploitation in the world, both historical and current. We believe that all these forms of exploitation (patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism, racism) are intricately linked with the exploitation of Mother Earth. Though the forms may be different, all of these injustices have the same roots: a self-destructive drive that is based on a dominant mindset rather than one of mutuality. Every organism seeks connection, with members of our species or of other species. Everyone is born with this knowledge. But the current exploitative culture is slowly eroding our ability to build that connection. What remains is a culture that promotes exploitation and justifies it by creating a false hierarchy between humans and between humans and nature. Therefore, we believe that we need to tackle all forms of injustice and exploitation.

BED actively encourages and supports its members to follow their hearts and engage in any movement that they feel most inclined to. Since we are a volunteer-based organization, BED does not have the capacity to be involved in every single issue that arises. We also acknowledge that everyone is facing a different set of social, political, and ecological climates, which means the nature of our struggle is also going to be different. It is important that we effectively strategize and organize our efforts in order to maximize its impact. We focus on capacity building for our members so that they can effectively organize whatever movement is important in the place they live.

BED also believes in building communities and strengthening existing ones. As activists, we believe that the stronger the communities we have around us, the greater the chances of our success and the better ways we have in dealing with the challenges of being part of our struggles against our culture. For this, we are inspired by indigenous people (particularly those belonging to matriarchal societies), who still live in harmony with nature and who have a strong sense of community within themselves. As much as we can, we support the current indigenous struggle against the dominant culture. When there are none of those struggles, we aspire to incorporate indigenous and matriarchal values in our communities.
